What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring material that is found in rock fissures throughout the world. Due to its excellent fibrous properties, it was widely used throughout the construction industry for many years up until the late 1980’s.

Asbestos is found in building materials such as:
  • Fibro sheeting
  • Fibro roof sheeting including shingles
  • Water and drainage pipes
  • Vinyl floor tiles
  • Roof and building insulation
  • Vermiculite ceiling finishes
  • Floor sheeting as compressed fibro
  • Pipe heat insulation
  • Gutters and down pipes
  • Boiler insulation
  • Paint products

Asbestos Classifications

Asbestos has two predominant classifications: non-friable asbestos and friable asbestos.

1. Non-friable Asbestos

Non-friable or bonded asbestos is bonded together with another material such as concrete or vinyl. These products are the general building materials present in the common early style homes. These products are normally safe to the occupants unless they are disturbed in such ways as damage, drilling or removing.

2. Friable Asbestos

Friable asbestos is any asbestos that is constructed without any bonding materials. Commonly in the home these comprise of hot water pipe rope or lagging, millboard and dust not associated with non-friable asbestos removals.

Friable asbestos is also commonly found in early industrial heating and pipe work lagging due to the insulation and heat resistant properties found in asbestos fibres.
This photograph shows our friable asbestos removals completed for a furnace in Port Kembla. This was also a full demolition.

It is also widely known that it was used as ceiling insulation known as “Mr Fluffy”. It is now known as Asbestos loose-fill insulation.

Houses damaged by fire are also classified as being completely contaminated by friable asbestos. Houses that have extensively damaged asbestos roof sheeting because of a hailstorm are also classified as being completely contaminated by friable asbestos.
Friable asbestos is extremely hazardous and should only be handled by Worldwide Demolitions as we are experienced in the preparation and removal of all materials that contain asbestos.

Hygienist Services

Hygienist services can be required for many reasons, such as carrying out inspections and reports on your house or structure to assess the presence of hazardous materials before renovating or demolishing.

A licensed asbestos assessor and/or occupational hygienist can provide the following information:

  • Hazardous materials report
  • Clearance certificates
  • Air monitoring and reports
  • Asbestos Removal Control Plan (ARCP)
  • MakeSafe report
  • Hazardous materials testing
  • Inspection reports

MakeSafe protocols must be followed if there is any damage to a house that is suspected to contain asbestos materials.
If you think you may have potential hazardous material that could pose a potential hazard in your home, workplace or next project, please call us immediately for a free consultation and quote.
